Summer of 2006: As part of Brad Hawkes's summer internship, he looks into what can be done to make shared tags more discoverable (right now users have to email each other URLs with 20-digit long URLs). A lot of users end up sharing their starred items instead, since that enables one-click sharing. On the other hand, having to create a tag, share it and manually apply it each time is rather tedious. On one hand, tag sharing is quite flexible: you can share both individual items by applying a tag to them, and whole feeds (creating spliced streams) if you share folders. March 2006: Tag sharing launches, along with the ability to embed a shared tag as a widget in the sidebar of your blog or other sites. October 2005: A remnant of the "People" tab is present in the HTML of the launched version of Google Reader, and an eagle-eyed Google Blogoscoped forum member notices it and speculates as to its intended use. There are no complex ACLs, just a single boolean that controls whether a tag is world-readable. September 2005: Ben Darnell and Laurence Gonsalves add the concept of "public tags" to the nascent Reader backend and frontend. There's no concept of a managed friends list, after all when the users are just a few dozen co-workers, we're all friends, right? Among other neat features, it has a "People" tab that shows you what other people on the system are subscribed to and reading. Late 2004 to early 2005: Chris Wetherell starts work on "Fusion", one of the 20% projects that serve as prototypes for Google Reader. For those of you who are new here, I was Reader's tech lead from 2006 to 2010. With the upcoming transition of social features in Google Reader to Google+, I thought this would be a good time to look back at the notable social-related events in Reader's history.

Interestingly enough, the individuals who started the study with the highest sympathetic responses (high stress levels) enjoyed the biggest relaxation benefits from listening to the natural ambient sounds. Within this study, nature sounds were associated with a decrease in the body’s sympathetic response (tied to “fight-or-flight”) and an increase in parasympathetic response- the one that helps the body relax and function in normal circumstances ( or “rest-digest” response). Reaction times were also slower when the participants were exposed to artificial sounds compared to natural ones. Slight differences in heart rate were also noticeable. Inward-focused attention can include worrying and rumination about things specific to an individual-patterns that have been linked to conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Specifically, listening to artificial sounds was associated with patterns of inward-focused attention, while nature sounds promoted more external-focused attention. When the fMRI results were reviewed, the researchers noticed that activity in the brain’s default mode network- an area involved in mind wandering- varied depending on the background sounds being played. Their heart rates were monitored as well, to indicate changes in their autonomic nervous systems-the system of organs involved in involuntary processes such as breathing, blood pressure, temperature, metabolism, and digestion. While exposed to each soundscape, participants also performed a task to measure their attention and reaction time. This was the first study to use brain scans, heart-rate monitors, and behavioral experiments to suggest a physiological cause for these effects. To explore the connection between the brain, the body, and surrounding noise, researchers at Brighton and Sussex Medical School in England recruited seventeen healthy adult participants to receive functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans while listening to a series of five-minute soundscapes featuring natural and man-made environments. As found through a 2017 study, sounds derived from nature actually alter the connections in our brains, which reduces our body’s natural fight-or-flight instinct. Fortunately for us, researchers are working to better understand why natural ambient sounds in particular have such a positive impact on humans mentally and physically. Colors of sound (white noise, pink noise, brown noise, etc.)Īccording to the Australian Academy of Science, exposure to prolonged or excessive noise has been shown to cause an array of health issues ranging from increased stress, poor concentration, decreased productivity, communication difficulties, and fatigue from lack of sleep, to more serious issues such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, tinnitus, and hearing loss.Common Household sounds (Vacuum, Dishwasher, Air conditioner, Hair Dryer, Clothes Dryer). birds chirping, crickets, frogs croaking, etc.)

Shopping centers during the holidays were definitely not an exciting situation for me either. I get what I need and leave, even at 34 I still don’t like excess stimulation. The child is likely experiencing panic and anxiety over the excess sounds, lights, people etc. You have probably been in the store and seen a child who was acting very upset, other shoppers whisper “that child needs disciplined”, assuming that the child is having a tantrum over not getting their way, but this is also known as an autism meltdown, which is the same thing as sensory overload. We do not process things in our surroundings with ease. We start to panic and get upset, this is the result of a sensory processing disorder that we experience. Pic ID: An image of my violin, laying on top of sheet music.įor people on the autism spectrum, situations that are fast paced with a lot of lights, sounds, and people can feel very confusing. I heard other people say, “Let’s do that again!” I was just looking forward to trying other rides that came with less stimulation. It took me several minutes to feel comfortable with my surroundings again. Once the ride stopped I was very relieved to get off of it. The idea of being stuck in a space and not having clear thoughts of my surroundings was frightening to say the least. My surroundings became very confused, I could not tell if the ride was going up or down, and the stimulation was coming at me too fast and I just wanted it to stop. It was worsened by the high pitch sounds around me, which were screams from excited patrons at the park. The roller coaster started going, and so did my anxiety. I was already extra nervous about it because I did not like heights and did not like the stimulation that comes with certain rides. It started out pretty fun, but then we got in line to ride the roller coaster. I was just happy to be included in something, so I went along with the group. We were given tickets to the theme park at school for reading a certain amount of books. I was 12 the first time that I got on a roller coaster at a theme park. Then signals to make movement happen would travel down tracts in the front portion of the spinal cord and go out to the muscles. The signals from the nociceptors would travel up the back of the spinal cord to the brain, possibly to the reticular activating system which is important in sleep and wakening, he suggests. I suspect it's probably a similar sort of response even when we are asleep." We can tolerate it for a certain length of time and then we have to move. "We've all experienced this when sitting in one position. He thinks unpleasant stimuli from pressure on pain receptors (called nociceptors) initiate a coordinated rolling over response, and this can happen whether we are asleep, or simply lying awake in bed. When patients are paralysed for a long time, for example in intensive care, they need to be turned regularly to prevent pressure sores, he adds. "I think movement while we are asleep is a protective mechanism to prevent problems developing from prolonged pressure - such as reduced blood flow to certain parts of the skin," he says. "If you just lie in the same position all night you'd probably get stiff joints, and problems with the skin," she suggests.ĭr Peter Roessler, a fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, agrees. She thinks that rolling over during sleep for adults and children is simply a matter of getting comfortable. "There's a big innate drive so that they learn to roll so they can get on all fours and start to crawl," she says, adding that rolling over is a "developmental milestone." "No one that I'm aware of has specifically researched this," says Dr Harriet Hiscock, a paediatric sleep specialist at the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne.īabies start to roll at about four months, says Hiscock.īefore this time "they don't have the coordination to do it and they are simply not strong enough," she says. Rolling over in bed is something we take for granted, yet it appears we know very little about this basic human movement. The runner has to be able to move out into his secondary lead without coming in contact with or working around an infielder. Infielders can stand anywhere they would like to, as long as they don't impede the runners access to his running lane. Rick answered: Keil, thank you for your question. The basecoach said my shortstop had to backup because he was in the runners baseline at second base, before a pitch was made. Even so, the shortstop should know his role, and play within that framework, or you are simply giving away outs. Can the infielders stand in the runners baseline? Shortstop is absolutely vital, and should be filled by the best defensive player on your team. However, if the shortstop does not make it (for whatever reason), the second baseman *must* take the bag. Usually, the shortstop will cover the base, while the second baseman will back up the play a good ten feet deep. If a runner attempts to steal second, both the shortstop and second baseman should break for the bag. The shortstop must wheel over to third to cover the bag, while the second bseman will likewise shift to cover second. In the event of a bunt, the third baseman will be charging the ball, leaving third base vacant. However, the player should always bear in mind that the first responsibility is a sure out – make the throw to first if he does not think he hs a chance to get the runner at second. If fielded near the bag, the player should know whether to step on the bag himself or to make the throw to second base via the underhand toss. With a runner on first and less than two outs, the top priority should always be to attempt a double play. It is vital that the second baseman and the shortstop communicate and clearly understand when each will be covering the base! If they get into one another’s way, outs will be lost. If the ball goes into the outfield, he should be prepared to receive a throw at the bag. If the ball is hit between second base and the right foul line, the player should always cover the bag in the event of a throw from second or first. If the ball gets into the outfield, he should sprint out onto the grass and act as a cutoff man. If the ball is hit to the third baseman, it is his job to back up the play. If he can get to the ball, he should do so. The right side of the infield is the shortstop’s domain – anything hit between second base and the left foul line is his responsibility. The player’s momentum will carry him either to the ball, or toward his base. On any contact, the first step should be toward the ball. Above all, a shortstop must be able to make decisions and think on his feet, as he is the captain of the defense, and is responsible for setting the tone on the field. Shortstops routinely throw to first base, sometimes from deep in the hole therefore, arm strength is a big requirement, as only the third baseman has a longer throw in the infield. Naturally, your shortstop must have a solid glove – he frequently has the best defensive skill of any payer on the team. While raw speed is not an absolute requirement, the faster he is, the more range he has among infielders, the shortstop has the most need of speed. Your shortstop must be mobile and quick on his feet. Of course, in order to properly prepare the team, you must understand each position! Never underestimate the power of a well-coached team – time and time again, at every level of competition, we see that teams who function as a team outperform those who do not, even when the opposition supposedly has more talent or ability. This kind of coching does a huge disservice to the team as a whole and even to the star players themselves, who tend to develop very bad habits because of this. the shortstop is usually the best player on the team, and the head coach is often tempted to let him do what he wants, figuing that other players will only get in his way. This article – How to Play Shortstop (the Right Way) – is part of our “How to Play” series aimed at helping youth league coaches properly instruct their players on the fundamentals of each position. The pentagonal prism can be augmented by a square pyramid to form the augmented pentagonal prism (J52), a Johnson solid. It may be considered to be the extrusion of the pentagon. These prisms are a type of heptahedron with 7 faces, 10 vertices. The pentagonal prism is a 3D uniform polyhedron bounded by 7 polygons (2 pentagons and 5 squares), 15 edges, and 10 vertices. Prism has two equal parallel bases, the upper and lower base. A pentagonal prism is a prism that has two pentagonal bases and five lateral rectangular faces. However, if the problem will just mention pentagonal prism without specifying regular pentagon or right, it is most of the time a right regular pentagonal prism.
